Here is a picture of the 512K/512K Flash/RAM card out of the packaging.

There are even instructions with it. Does anybody read these?

1. Open the Card Flap and push the card into Slot 1.

2. Leaving the Card Flap open (or open it again), press the reset switch a couple of times with an opened paperclip.

3. Shut the Card Flap

You should see the HARD RESET ... come up on the screen, if not

try moving the contrast knob one way and then the other

if that fails - go back to 2 and try again.

If it works you should see the INDEX screen.
Note that UK is displayed underneath the OZ symbol top right-hand corner of the screen.

Fetching a file from the Flashcard

Press J to start Flashstore

Use the cursor keys  to move to the next window, then the  five times until it is over the F /flash.txt filename.

Press  to select that file.
The following screen will be displayed. You can use the cursor keys to change the Save to: destination if desired, but :RAM.1/flash.txt is fine.

Press  to confirm this.

This screen shows the file was copied to :RAM.1 successfully. Press either  or  to resume as instructed.
The following screen is displayed.

As Flashstore is a Popdown, pressing  exits the application and (in this case) returns to the INDEX.

Using Pipedream

Let's have a look at the file in Pipedream by selecting P

Select File Load either
pressing the  key 4 times to display the FILES menu, then selecting it with the  key

or using the short-form key presses of FL

To save typing in the file name, the Filer may be used to select this. Select the Filer F

Move the cursor to the right using  key.

Select that file by pressing the  key.

Note that a mark to the left of the file name indicating that this file has been selected.
Press the  key to return to Pipedream.
Note that the :RAM.1/flash.txt has been filled in.

This text file is a 'Plain Text' file so before the file is loaded the 'Load as plain text' needs to changed to 'Yes.'
Move the cursor down 3 lines and use the 'Y' key to change it.

Finally use the  key to start loading in the file.
The following screen is displayed showing the start of the file.

Note the page map is shown on the right-hand side with a small vertical bar (just next to the OZ symbol).
This bar shows you which part of the page is being viewed. In this case it is the top 6 lines.
By pressing  you can go straight to the end of the file.

If this has worked for you, this is an excellent test for the RAM as it has been tested at both saving a file to it as well as it being used in the Pipedream application.

When you have finished with this file it is a good idea to kill this activity to release the memory it is using.
Pressing the  key will display the following:-

Move the cursor to the right  to select the desired suspended activity to kill, then press KILL

Note that the KILL menu command cannot be used e.g.  moving the cursor across and then the  key

This is done to ensure that you really wanted to KILL the suspended application.

Using Unzip

There are additional applications supplied on the Rakewell flash card that are not in OZ. One of these is Unzip.
To demonstrate this Fetch Romcombiner.zip from the flash card.

Select Unzip U or from the INDEX

Use the technique using the Filer (as shown above) to select the correct filename.

Use the  key to start unzipping.
Files may be skipped by selecting the 'n' function

Selecting 'y' unzips the file.

Selecting 'y' unzips the file.

Selecting 'y' unzips the file.

All done. Select Q to Quit this popdown. Press  to see all the commands.

Selecting the Filer F will show the additional files added to the :RAM.1.
Pressing  twice here will  catalogue them and give you the file sizes.

That's all for now.
