GQ-4X - Am29F080 1M Flash

Am29F080 1M Flash

General Description

The Am29F080 is an 8 MBit, 5.0 volt-only memory organised as 1,048,576 bytes. The 8 bits of data appear on DQ0-DQ7.The Am29F080 is offered in 40 pin TSOP and 44-pin SO packages. This device designed to be programmed in-system with the standard 5.0 volt Vcc supply. A 12.0 volt Vpp is not required to program or erase operations. This device can also be programmed in standard EPROM programmers.

Adding or Updating the "devices.txt" file

This procedure needs to be repeated whenever a software update is installed. as I found out when installing from v6.26 to (Aug-14-2015) v6.37. I also changed the compatibility settings to Window 7. The latest one now is v6.38. http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/mcumall_download.asp #5

The devices.txt file is a database file that contains all the information on how different devices are programmed. We need to add this flash chip as a new device as it does not use the same pin-outs as the TSOP40 header. It is prudent to make a copy of the original file before adding anything.

This needs to be updated initially for both this chip and EPROM cards.

To update this file go to the installation files, in Win8.1 the default was

C:\Program Files (x86)\GQ USB Programmer

Right-click on NOTEPAD.exe and  Run as administrator (otherwise you will not be able to save it).

Insert the following line Marked in orange in the FLASH - 8bit mode section.

Extended Header

An Extended Address Adapter is used to connect A19 to the Z88 Extender Card via the 8 way connector.

-O   O-
A23O   O-
A22O   OA21
A19O   OA20

Do not connect the EPROM Programmer to the Host computer yet.

  • Plug in the Z88 Memory card into the Z88 Extender card
  • Plug in the A19 lead into the Header connector on the EPROM Programmer
  • Plug in the Z88 Extender card into the programmer's ZIF socket.
  • Switch position Left.
  • The Z88 Memory card is used just to get the correct spacing of the two cards but is removed before power is applied to the programmer.

  • Remove the Z88 Card
  • Connect USB cable to the EPROM programmer
  • Connect to the PC and
  • Initialise the EPROM Programmer

Select the chip you wish to use. In this example we are using the AM29F080*Z88.

Now plug in the Z88 Card.

Here is the screen for this chip.
